High Performance Sport
Professional sport is an activity oriented to the achievement of top results in sport on the world, European and republican championships level. The state undertakes obligations to finance the training of reserve and competitive athletes, establishing communication with international sports organizations, building national teams and providing their training, organizing sporting events in the Republic of Belarus. The victories on international competitions and successful organization of sporting events enhance the prestige of the country and promote its achievements thus boosting the international image of Belarus.
Belarusian athletes have always achieved top results on the high level competitions. 280 natives of Belarus became world and European champions in different sports, 76 Belarusians became Olympic champions.
The International Ice Hockey Federation has always has always paid attention to the capacities of Belarus in holding prestigious competitions. In 2004 Belarus played host to the IIHF Continental Cup Super Final and the IIHF World U18 Championship. Since then Belarus has played host to many ice hockey competitions. The 2014 IIHF World Championship took place in Belarus. At the Annual Congress of the International Ice Hockey Federation, which took place in May, 2009, Belarus got 75 votes out of 105 in the race for hosting the 2014 IIHF World Championship.
Belarus has been chosen the country of the 2nd European Games 2019.
